Raising funds (and a few eyebrows)

By Kara Nuzback | Nov 04, 2011

Milford — When you venture to create a grassroots sports team, especially a sport very few people have heard of, fundraisers are often a necessary evil to get things up and rolling.

Southern Delaware Rollergirls have held yard sales, car washes and other typical events meant to raise money for team t-shirts, practice equipment and countless other necessities.

It is always fun to hang out with my teammates outside of the rink.  But I can’t honestly say there’s no place I’d rather be than peddling my out-of-style clothes in someone’s front yard at 7 a.m. on a Saturday while someone tries to haggle me down from a 25-cent ticket price.

But the fundraiser we are planning to hold Saturday is one that I will shameless self-promote because I honestly think it’s going to be a blast.  So, if you happen to find yourself in Milford between 8 p.m. and midnight, Saturday, Nov. 5, stop by Milford Skating Center. Southern Delaware Rollergirls will host a one-night-only screening of Rocky Horror Picture Show.

Doors open at 8 p.m. for a look-a-like costume contest. First prize receives a one-night stay at a local Holiday Inn.  Second prize receives one free ticket to Movies at Midway.

Rocky Horror starts at 10:15 p.m.  A $12 entry fee will be charged at the door, which includes admission into the rink and a prop bag with rice, toilet paper, confetti and everything else you need to participate in the viewing.

Bring a blanket or a chair to sit on, and do not bring lighters, squirt guns or anyone under 18.  For those who are 21 and older, a simultaneous pre-party will be held at Park Place Restaurant and Lounge, across the street from the rink.
