The members craft exhibition will be juried by Susan Holt, gallery director and instructor of fine arts at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. In her personal work, she uses a variety of materials including fabric, photography, light and shadow in her installations. She lived for 16 years in Rome, where she met her husband and studied art. Holt currently lives in Salisbury, Md.
Many longtime artist members participate in this show. Dr. Joseph Schanno, a longtime art league member, remembers when he won first prize at this craft exhibition in the late 1980s. In the ‘60s he was a duck hunter and one day decided to see if he could carve a duck from a beautiful block of wood he found. That led to the purchase of better carving knives, and he has had a passion for carving birds ever since. Schanno, a vascular surgeon in Washington, D.C., retired to the Delmarva area and returns with a new selection of carved beauties along with over 100 other member artisans and their creations.
In addition to the craft exhibition in the Corkran Gallerie, a special RAL Instructor Show will be featured in the Ventures Gallery. This is the first show at the art league that will feature the works of the talented artists who teach the many RAL classes throughout the year. The Homestead will showcase a new Members Showcase - Figurative: Works Relating to the Human Form.
Throughout art history, the figure has been portrayed in many different lights. It has been rendered flawlessly, abstracted, beautified, distorted, suggested through other means, and celebrated. Figurative - Works Relating to the Human Form is a juried Members Showcase that will feature artworks in photography, drawing, and painting. The three exhibitions will run through July 13 and are free and open to the public.
