Randy Lee Ashcraft to perform night of Songs & Stories April 15Free and open to the public
The Rehoboth Beach Writers’ Guild will host another night of Songs & Stories Tuesday, April 15, at Dogfish Head Brewings and Eats on Rehoboth Avenue. The event, which starts at 7 p.m. and lasts until about 8:30, is free and open to the public.
Song & Stories features a unique pairing of live music, performed by the popular and award-winning Randy Lee Ashcraft, with one-of-a-kind short literary readings performed by local writers. The writers are given the challenge, prior to the event, to write a poem, brief essay or story (under 300 words) using the titles of the songs Randy Lee will perform.
The songs are all original and promise a variety of fun and creative responses. The night is a wonderful mix of stories - sad, funny, and nostalgic - and music, all connected through key words. Who knows what the writers will do with the song titled, “Hot and Sudsy!”
Ashcraft, a former Green Beret in the U.S. Army, has released five albums and is a regular performer at Smitty McGee's in Fenwick Island and at numerous other venues across the Eastern Shore. In 1999, he received a citation from Gov. Parris Glendening of Maryland honoring his "dedicated efforts to share the beauty of the Eastern Shore of Maryland region through his music and the song 'Shore Thing.'"
In addition to opening for such national acts as Lonestar, Phil Vassar, Aaron Tippin, Sawyer Brown, Travis Tritt, Toby Keith and in 2011, Josh Turner and Sara Evans, Ashcraft has many times been named Best Entertainer/Singer of the Eastern Shore, as well as Best Singer/Songwriter on Delmarva. He is one of the original musicians, along with Ed Shockley, Kent Schocht and Stuart Vining, who inspired the writers’ guild to incorporate songs and songwriting into their readings, which the guild has been hosting every month since 2006.
