Long Neck — Discussing a need for post-secondary educational opportunities, expansion of senior services and the rights of land lease homeowners, Paulette Rappa officially launched her campaign for the House of Representatives 37th District May 19 at the Paradise Grill in Long Neck.

Rappa, a Democrat from Millsboro, said she wants to bring jobs and a sense of community to eastern Sussex County.

Rappa, 52, said Sussex County county is seeing a large influx of 65 and older residents and emphasized the need to provide services for this demographic.

“Sussex County is now fifth in the country in population of 65 year olds and older,” she said. “These people will need financial security and health care services. They should be able to age in their own homes with dignity.”

Rappa said educational issues facing Sussex County youth after high school need to be addressed. Vocational education in Sussex County is crucial, she said, and needs to be expanded. She said she would also like to see a four-year college in southern Delaware.

“Young people need to realize that public education is the pathway to the American dream,” said the mother of eight and educator of 16 years.

Rappa said she will work to gain more rights for land lease homeowners. She said that owners of land leased homes cannot get competitive mortgages and cannot pull equity out of their homes.

Rappa, a land lease homeowner herself, said, “my house is not my car. It needs to be deeded, not titled.”

The district represents Georgetown and Long Neck. District incumbent Rep. Ruth Briggs King, a Republican from Georgetown, has represented the district since 2009 and has not filed her re-election papers. Rappa filed her papers Jan. 6.

The filing deadline in noon on July 8 for all candidates.
