RBWG to offer monthly poetry classes starting Oct. 12

Taught by poets Gail Comorat and Ethan Joella
Oct 04, 2013

The Rehoboth Beach Writers’ Guild offers monthly poetry classes geared to writers of all skill levels who want to hone their work, as artists have always done, by imitating the greats.

Imitation and Innovation in Poetry will run from 10 a.m. to noon, Saturday, Oct. 12, at Browseabout Books, 13 Rehoboth Ave., Rehoboth Beach. The class will take place once a month on the second Saturday except for the December class, which will take place on the first. In addition to the first class Oct. 12, classes are scheduled Nov. 9, Dec. 7, Jan. 11, Feb. 8, March 8, April 12 and May 1.

Taught by publishing and award-winning poets Gail Comorat and Ethan Joella, Imitation and Innovation in Poetry takes as its starting point Salvador Dali‘s quote, “Only after you’ve perfected the technique of the masters can you develop your own style.” The question for poets is, who should contemporary poets be reading and imitating? And how can this imitation teach them to write better poems?

Participants in this class will use "The Autumn House Anthology of Contemporary American Poetry" (second edition, edited by Michael Simms) to study some of the greatest poets writing today. Each week, participants will focus on two to three poets and spend class time discussing how each uses style, form, line length and breaks, and theme. Then, using this knowledge, participants will choose a poet to imitate in their own work.

The class of eight sessions costs $320 for RBWG members and $360 for nonmembers and is limited to the first eight participants who sign up. Registration is ongoing and the class is currently half full. Participants are asked to pay for six of the eight classes up front.

The Rehoboth Beach Writers Guild is a nonprofit 501c3 association founded to encourage, support and promote writers of all skill levels. RBWG programs are made possible, in part, by a grant from the Delaware Division of the Arts, a state agency dedicated to nurturing and supporting the arts in Delaware, in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts.
