Reader wants answers, truth on Safe Haven

By April L. Hudson | Apr 25, 2014

It has been six months since the senseless tragedy at Safe Haven Animal Sanctuary. I want answers. I want the truth.

I want the board of directors, specifically Hal Dukes and Lynn Lofthouse, to be accountable to the public for their blatant, inhumane actions. I want them to face the public. I want to hear from them. I want to hear from the AG investigator assigned to the case. I want to hear from our elected officials who promised to take action.

I want to know why all the grant monies radically disappeared. I want to know why it is OK that the mishandling of the thousands of dollars in cash and supplies provided by the public over the years has not been questioned.

I want to know why the public was told that the facility was to close at the end of November, giving more time for the dogs to be adopted, only to find the facility locked 15 days before the end of the month. I want to know why the facility was inaccessible on the day that volunteers showed up to adopt, foster and rescue the remaining animals. I want to know why records on the dogs were never found, specifically, those dogs that were euthanized.

According to staff that were “let go,” only three dogs were “unadoptable.” Two of those dogs were adopted before the euthanization, leaving only one that was questionable. The 16 dogs euthanized were adoptable. I don't think the public knows that. Why did Lynn Lofthouse lie and say they were not adoptable? Why haven't the employees that were “let go” been able to collect unemployment?

I graciously ask the public to ask for total accountability regarding this abominable act. I ask that we never forget the innocent dogs that were killed on Nov. 16. I ask to never allow this kind of inhumanity to happen again. I ask that the Safe Haven board of directors and every person directly involved with this Sussex County horror be brought to justice and to never be allowed to work with any kind of animal again.

I don't want to hear various versions of the story. I don't want to hear points of view. I want the truth.
