Thoughts From the Sidelines

Ready to leave this winter behind!

By Sumner Spence | Mar 13, 2014

March madness is close. Congratulations to The University of Delaware for winning the CAA conference tournament for the first time since 1999. I was just a sophomore in high school then! It was a nail biter, going all the way down to the final seconds. We won't know who Delaware will play until Sunday, March 16 and I personally hope they're not a 16 seed. In the 29-year history of seeding in the NCAA tournament, a 16-seed has never beaten a No. 1 seed. GO, UD!

In golf news, Patrick Reed won the WGC tournament at Doral. Up by two strokes and approaching the very difficult last hole, Reed finished with a bogey to seal the win. Reed made some golf history of his own in that he is the first golfer to win on the PGA Tour three times before being eligible to play in a major championship. The bigger story from golf news this week is with Tiger Woods' reoccurring back injury. I hope he has learned his lesson and doesn't try to continue playing hurt for the Masters and ruin the rest of his season! That would be déja vu from the 2008 season after winning the US Open that year. You might remember that the win came with costly consequences. He had to sit out the rest of the season to rehab his broken leg.

It's hard to believe that with this polar blast, the official MLB season is about to get started. Sadly, the Phillies are still struggling to score runs. They better get their act together fast! This is hard for me to admit, but I always forget how boring spring training is to watch with so many preseason games. I do it anyway just to get that feeling that summer could be close.

Here's to everyone enjoying St. Paddy's Day!
