Rebecca Lusk wins Schab, Smith scholarships
Rebecca Lusk, an award-winning, top academic graduate of Cape Henlopen High School, received two of the scholarships awarded by the Greater Lewes Foundation this year.
Entering the University of Delaware this fall in pursuit of a teaching career, Lusk will be supported by cash awards from both the Maureen Schab Education Fund and the George H.P. Smith Scholarship Fund.
The Smith fund is a one-time grant, and the Schab award is renewable for up to three more years based upon continued academic achievement. The Schab and Smith scholarships were each created to memorialize outstanding members of the Lewes community - highly regarded educator Maureen Schab and George H.P. Smith, a former council person and mayor, as well as a longtime teacher in the Cape school system.
Lusk earned a cumulative 98.30 GPA during her four years at Cape, where she took a number of college-level courses and received awards for her diverse interests and activities. As a local titleholder for the Miss Delaware Scholarship Organization, her S.T.A.R.S platform allowed her to interact with classrooms across the state to discuss the importance of the arts. She will also soon be competing for the title of Miss Delaware.
At Delaware, Lusk will pursue her interest in becoming an elementary school teacher. “We are thrilled to play a small part in helping Rebecca Lusk achieve her objectives,” said Joe Stewart, chair of the GLF. “The Schab and Smith scholarships are meaningful, carefully considered awards, and she is a very worthy recipient of both.”
The endowments of both the Maureen Schab and George Smith scholarships continue to grow each year through private donations, Stewart said. “The larger the endowments become, the more students like Rebecca we can serve, and the greater our recognition of these two important members of the Lewes community,” Stewart said.
Anyone interested in making a tax-deductible donation to either the Schab or Smith scholarship funds should contact the Greater Lewes Foundation, 135 Second St. in Lewes, at 302-644-0107.
