Art of Russia
Peter Antolini
Peter Antolini will share Russian paintings from his private collection. The history of socialist realist painting is a tale of extraordinary movement in the art of the twentieth century, with a scale unmatched anywhere in the world and engaged for decades the talents of thousands of artists across a vast, multiracial empire. Socialist realism emphasized the social role of art: it insisted on the superiority of content over form. Russian painting has, in general, the look and feel of European paintings and it has been broadly shaped by European influence. However, long periods of political and cultural self-absorption – inevitable, perhaps, in such a vast country – have established a chronology of change that is peculiarly Russian. Hors d’oeuvres and Russian Vodka will be provided and catered by Blue Moon.
