Four candidates for the position of Rehoboth Beach city manager will be in town for interviews with the city commissioners Saturday, Nov. 9.

Commissioner Patrick Gossett said almost all the interviews will take place in executive session, closed to the public. The session is expected to last from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., Gossett said, with the hope that at the end, the commissioners will select a candidate and begin contract negotiations.

Mayor Sam Cooper also speculated that the commissioners would soon work with one of the four candidates on an employment agreement.

“That would be the hope,” Cooper said.

Gossett said it is unlikely a public announcement would be made Nov. 9. He said it could take a couple days to negotiate the contract and the prospective candidate would also have to give notice to the current employer.

Gossett said the four being interviewed are from all around the country, and all have previous experience as town or city managers. The city required a bachelor’s degree and five years of city government administration experience in its job description.

Gossett, chairman of the city’s personnel committee, said the commissioners will meet with each candidate for two hours, with time reserved at the end for additional discussion or to hold second interviews with one or two of the candidates.

“This is the culmination of a lot of work,” Gossett said.

This is the first city manager search the city commissioners have conducted in 31 years. Current City Manager Greg Ferrese was hired in 1982 after serving as borough manager of Ellwood City, Pa. Ferrese is retiring Thursday, Dec. 5.
