Rehoboth Beach — Rehoboth Beach police continue to seek information on an assault that took place June 22 on the beach near Wilmington Avenue.

According to police, two women, ages 33 and 35, said at 12:30 a.m., while they were on the beach area, they observed a group of six or seven men, about 20 to 25 years old. At some point, police say, one of the men appeared to be recording the women using his cellphone camera. After the man was twice told to stop, a physical altercation took place. Both women said a black man, wearing a red shirt and with a shaved head, struck them in the head and face area.

The victims said the group of men left the beach area, heading toward Dolle's on the Boardwalk. The women said they followed the group to the Boardwalk but eventually lost sight of them. The women took themselves to Beebe Healthcare where they were treated for concussions. One victim received an injury around the eye area. Hospital staff later contacted Rehoboth police to report the assault.

Chief Keith Banks said the incident appears to be random. He said police do not suspect gang activity or a hate crime took place, but investigators are not ruling anything out at this time.

Anyone with further information on this incident is asked to contact Lt. William L. Sullivan, 227-2577, or Crime Stoppers at www.tipsubmit.com.
