Rehoboth prepares for life after FerreseCity hopes to have candidate in place by Nov. 1
Rehoboth Beach — Rehoboth Beach officials have begun charting a course to hire the city’s first new city manager in 30 years.
With City Manager Greg Ferrese set to retire on Thursday, Dec. 5, Commissioner Patrick Gossett said a successor should be in place by Friday, Nov. 1 at the latest, with a three-to-five week overlap for the new city manager to learn from Ferrese.
Gossett, chairman of the city’s personnel committee, said the committee should look into a search firm to help come up with candidates. He said the three to five week timeline is merely a guideline, and a candidate could be brought in sooner.
Mayor Sam Cooper said while the commissioners could find a candidate themselves, a search firm could be helpful in conducting preliminary interviews and narrowing the list of candidates, after which, the commissioners could conduct final interviews.
Ferrese was hired in 1982 after interviewing with a committee that included then-Commissioner Cooper.
“It’s not a matter of just going out and hiring the person with the most credentials, in my view,” Cooper said. “It’s a matter of getting the personality, the experience and education that fits what we think is appropriate.”
The commissioners will continue to discuss the city manager position at their 9 a.m., Monday, July 8 meeting, in the city commissioners' room Gossett said. The commissioners will consider authorizing the personnel committee to solicit proposals from search firms with expertise in finding public sector employees, review the proposals and engage a firm. Gossett said there is still much work to be done to find the right candidate.
“We don’t want to be making this same decision one year from now. We want to pick the right candidate for now, and have that individual committed to us for a long period of time,” he said.
Following discussion of the city manager position, the commissioners continue discussion of the City Hall complex, and the next steps moving forward.
