Despite a glancing blow from a hurricane in the morning, about 60 people gathered  at Rehoboth VFW Post 7447 at 6 p.m. on the Fourth of July.

Post Commander Bob McGinniss spoke briefly about the holiday. Next, Greg Gause, post chaplain, gave a very moving prayer about this special date in the nation's history. Following the prayer, Post Commander Ladies Auxiliary President Elsie McGurgan and Men's Auxiiary Commander Ed Schaefer each spoke about the holiday. Included was the coincidence of John Adams and Thomas Jefferson both dying on July 4, 1826, the 50th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. President James Monroe also died July 4 five years later.

At the conclusion of the ceremony, the post commander led the group in the Pledge to the Flag. When the event concluded, the evening's DJ played Lee Greenwood's "God Bless the USA" - a favorite song with VFW members everywhere. A large group formed a circle, held hands, and sang along, raising their hands in unity at the line "proud to be an American." The gathering also marked the annual renewal of the close bond of fellowship among all facets of the Rehoboth VFW as new and re-elected officers began the VFW year, which started July 1.
