Rep. King concerned about intersection safety
I am writing to express my serious concerns as they relate to the safety of the intersection at Route 113 and Speedway Road in Georgetown.
Tragically, another fatality at this intersection has occurred within the last week. According to news reports, a motorcyclist and his passenger traveling northbound on Route 113 (on April 27) were killed after being hit by a vehicle attempting to cross the dangerous intersection in order to turn left from 113 southbound onto Speedway Road.
Over the years I have been diligently working to improve this intersection. I have continued these efforts even though this particular intersection is not technically located in my legislative district. But, so many of my constituents travel this area on a regular basis and some are impacted daily.
Following the recent fatality, I immediately contacted the Department of Transportation in Georgetown and DelDOT Secretary Bhatt to again see if there are solutions that we can explore to address these serious safety concerns. I will step up my efforts even more now to make sure DelDOT commits to making life-saving improvements to this area of roadway.
Naturally, I am very saddened to learn of these two deaths and I extend my deepest sympathies to their families. In the meantime, while I work with DelDOT officials and local state legislators in re-visiting our efforts to address the concerns that I have mentioned in this letter, I encourage motorists to use extra caution while traveling Route 113 in the areas of Speedway Road and Kruger Road.
