Resort chamber supports Dewey baywalk

By Carol A. Everhart | Feb 18, 2013

The following letter was send to Gayle Calder at the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental control with a copy submitted to the Cape Gazette for publication.

Dear Ms. Calder:

On Feb. 8,  I testified at the Ruddertowne/DNREC public hearing in Dewey Beach, on behalf of the Rehoboth Beach-Dewey Beach Chamber of Commerce.

I am re-stating my comments in writing as personally stated Feb. 8.

I support the project application as submitted. For 20 years I have watched elected officials and others express various opinions of what could be created in Dewey that would be as appealing to visitors as the nightlife. The opinions may have varied, but there was one common thread. They all wanted an activity or attraction that encouraged more families to visit and stay longer.  This is that opportunity - baywalks, piers and their fingers are passive by nature and attract leisure visitors - of all ages - just as a pathway in a park provides.  This project can only encourage longer stays, extend the season, and broaden the visitor base, all of which has a positive impact on tourism, business and property values.
