Riders run to Henlopen Conference cross country titles

Caesar Rodney cross country ran to the team titles in both the boys' and girls' races Nov. 3 at the Henlopen Conference Championship meet held at Killens Pond.

The Riders also swept up both junior varsity races in dominating fashion.

The varsity boys' team scores were Caesar Rodney 37, Sussex Tech 55, Milford 72, Cape 104, Smyrna 141, Dover 161, Lake Forest 186, Indian River 257, Polytech 262 and Sussex Central 284.

The top seven finishers for the boys were Henry Phalen of Milford 16:42, PJ Gallucci of Caesar Rodney 16:45, Austin MacElrevey of Cape 16:51, Sam Phillips of Caesar Rodney 17:04, Sam Hete of Sussex Tech 17:12, Ryan Thornburg of Cape 17:20 and Dylan Varrato of Sussex Tech 17:21.

The girls' team title went to the Riders with 47 points followed by Milford 77, Smyrna 82, Sussex Tech 90, Cape Henlopen 106, Dover 140, Lake Forest 153 and Polytech 219.

The top seven runners in the women’s race were Rebekah Mills of Caesar Rodney 19:18, Alexis Groce of Milford 19:47, Tori Vickers of Smyrna 6:33, Bethany Killmon of Sussex Tech 20:44, Ave Burliegh of Dover 20:50, Madison MacElrevey of Cape 21:00 and Erin Cooper of Smyrna 21:15.

“We had a good season after losing our top runners Ali [Coning] and Shanel [Dickens] to graduation," said Cape coach George Pepper. “Counting the top seven for both boys and girls, we have 13 of 14 runners returning."

The DIAA state championship meet will be held at Brandywine Creek State Park  Saturday, Nov. 11.  The first race starts at 1 p.m.
