SA students kick off learning expedition with trip to Ripley's Museum

Seventh-graders at Sussex Academy in Georgetown recently kicked off their Believe It or Not expedition with a visit to the Ripley’s Believe It or Not Museum in Ocean City, Md. The purpose of the expedition is to teach students how to be critical thinkers about what they see, hear and read.

Students also went to the Delaware Biotechnology Institute during the last week of January to learn how scientists collect information about things they can’t see. In reading and writing classes, they will be learning about persuasive topics and completing persuasive writing projects. In social studies, they will be learning about the roles of citizens. The community service component of the expedition will include a book swap. The proceeds will benefit a cause that the students vote for as the most unbelievable. The final showcase to display the students' work is scheduled for March 7.

The instructional framework at Sussex Academy is expeditionary learning, with learning expeditions as an integral part of the framework. Throughout the school year, students and teachers are involved in both school-wide and team learning expeditions to promote self-discovery and construct knowledge. During that time all classes tie into a common theme.

The 4th Annual National School Choice Week is being celebrated from Jan. 26 to Feb. 1. The goal is to increase public awareness of the importance of empowering parents with the freedom to choose the best educational environments for their children. National School Choice Week began in 2011 and has grown from 150 events to more than 5,500 nationwide planned for 2014.
