Sadly, some dreams turn into nightmares
Brazil's hope to become the first host nation to win the soccer World Cup since France did it in 1998 was dashed in short order! Not only did they fail, they failed miserably! They lost in a deplorable fashion 7-1, giving Germany the honor of scoring the most goals ever in a World Cup semifinal game in the 84-year history of the tournament. Brazil's defensive performance was the worst I have seen in 20 years of watching soccer on TV; it was quite ridiculous, actually. I don't think we will have any worries that Sunday's final will be a much better game. Germany vs Argentina will be a great match between two very good teams. My pick is going to be Germany in honor of a friend who was an exchange student that lived with us during our senior year of high school.
I am usually the most optimistic Philadelphia Phillies fan out there, but even I have to concede that the competitive part of the season is over, thanks to the way the Phillies played these last two weeks. They lost 10 out of the last 12 games, falling at least 10 back from the Atlanta Braves, who are currently in first place. The most disappointing part for me is the fact that they are probably going to trade two of my favorite players. Chase Utley and/or Jimmy Rollins will need to go in order to help the Phillies make major trades for improvement for next season. Pitiful that I am saying this in July.
The Wilmbledon tennis tournament ended this past weekend with a great final match between Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic. I enjoy watching both players, but I was hoping Federer would pull out the win because he is probably past his prime in terms of winning a Grand Slam tournament at the age of 32. The match itself was determined in five sets and took almost four hours to play. On the women's side, Petra Kovitiva won her second Wimbledon title. I felt bad for her not being in the limelight to win such a title but the match was over in only 53 minutes.
To close on a local note, I wanted to congratulate all of the all state lacrosse players from Cape who made the team. This honor was very well deserved.
