Apr 06, 2014

The Delaware School Counselor Association met March 13 for its annual Spring Conference. During the conference, counselors from across Delaware engaged in professional development, networking, and sharing of best practices. Also, the DSCA recognized school counselors who have been going above and beyond the call of duty.

Three school counselors were recognized for their outstanding service to their school, students, and the profession of school counseling. Each counselor was nominated by an administrator, colleague, parent, or students, and the counselor completed an application process. A counselor from each level - elementary, middle, and high school - was selected as the Delaware School Counselor of the Year.

The recipients of the awards were Cathy Besden-Showell, Bridget Smith, and Robert J. Bassett, Jr.

Besden-Showell is an elementary school counselor at Long Neck Elementary School in the Indian River School District. She has been a school counselor since 1987. Smith is a middle school counselor at Springer Middle School of the Brandywine School District. She has been an educator since 1991, and a school counselor for the past 12 years.  Bassett is a high school counselor at Polytech High School in Woodside. He started in education as an English teacher and has been a school counselor since 2000.
