Science meets art in digital lithography

At Anita Peghini-Räber Gallery May 10
May 08, 2014
"Blueprints 1," digital lithograph by Patricia Fisher.

Anita Peghini-Räber Gallery, 49 Baltimore Ave. in Rehoboth Beach, is showing cutting-edge artwork of Canadian native Dr. Patricia Fisher, who resides in Rehoboth Beach and in Victoria, Canada. Fisher is an artist and a scientist. She is a physicist, biologist and psychotherapist. She thrives where science meets art and incorporates both of them as human form. The public is welcome to view her work from 6 to 9 p.m., Saturday, May 10. Refreshments will be provided by the gallery.

Fisher works in the classical lithographic style of printmaking. The images are built up to 50 layers of hand-drawn sketches on paper. Each layer is carefully matched and balanced for its visual impact. Directional energy is taken into account, and texture plays a role indicating history. Up to 50 drawings are built up to become integrated in the final print. Fisher's Blueprints Series implies the question: "What is our impact on the natural world and the fundamental ways in which it ultimately defines us?" The nature of human constructed monuments and their duplication of natural structures can be found in the Monuments Series. The Natural History Series is concerned with the relationship between contemporary consumer culture and the natural world.

Unlike traditional lithography, which uses stone and press, these prints are digitally rendered and printed. This process is called digital lithography. The paper used is 200-year archival ink and acid free cold press archival print paper. Anita Peghini-Räber Gallery shows Patricia Fisher's Artist Proofs, which is the process of carefully monitored lithographs in the making by the artist. Each AP is unique. Fisher then prints 25 additional numbered lithographs, which are hand signed.
