Seaside Jewish Community to present 'Jews and the Performing Arts: a Rich Legacy' June 22

Lee Musoff to deliver Alfred Gross Lecture
Jun 01, 2013

Seaside Jewish Community will present its sixth annual Alfred Gross Memorial Lecture, “Jews and the Performing Arts: A Rich Legacy,” at 10 a.m., Saturday, June 22, beginning with a short service.

The Alfred Gross Lecture and Shabbat Service is the premier yearly event presented by the SJC Adult Education Committee. The event, which is free and open to all, will be held at SJC, 18970 Holland Glade Road, Rehoboth Beach.

Is there any aspect of artistic expression in which Jews have not made a significant contribution? SJC’s Lee Mussoff will discuss the work of writers such as Neil Simon, Larry Gelbart, Carl Reiner, Norman Lear and Molly Berg, plus additional composers and songwriters.

Mussoff has had a lifelong love of the theater and performing arts. As a high school teacher, she used dramatic arts in her English classes.

Mussoff 's lectures for Road Scholar (Elder Hostel) at Del Tech and in Lewes and Ocean City have included “A History of Broadway” and, more recently, “Jewish and Irish Humor.” That easily morphed into her program on Jews in the performing arts for SJC.

“When you talk about theater and performing arts, it is impossible not to include Jewish writers, directors, composers and performers,” she says. “There is just such a wealth of material for this fascinating topic.”

Reservations are required for lunch only. Call Anita Smulyan at 302-703-2900.
