Sen. Ernie Lopez: A breath of fresh air

By Jean C. Ardis | Mar 10, 2013

While gridlock and anger abound in Washington, I can’t help but pinch myself when I think how fortunate we are in the Cape Region to have a young, smart and capable new state senator in Ernie Lopez. I feel as though every time I go out in our area, be it in Lewes or Rehoboth, Ernie is there, either at a fundraiser for a local charity or dining and shopping at local restaurants and small businesses.

One day last week, I saw him on three different occasions, at Surf Bagel, Kids' Ketch and then standing on Rehoboth Avenue speaking to a group of people. Each time he had at least one of his young daughters with him, which means a lot to this grandmother.

I have lived in Delaware all my life and have been active in local politics for a long time. While I don’t agree with Ernie on everything, I know he takes great thought and care in coming to his decisions, and his committee assignments reflect the respect that was shown by the Senate Democrats in the other party for his intelligence and ability to build consensus.

The late Delaware Sen. Bill Roth said a long time ago that the way a person runs a campaign is a reflection of how they will lead once elected. Ernie’s campaign was clean and focused, just what all of us, Republicans and Democrats wanted. He took the high road and a coalition of voters from all political parties rewarded him with a 14-point victory that left no doubt in regard to the respect and trust he had earned.

I have friends who work in Legislative Hall, and by all accounts, Ernie is adored there and treats everyone in the building, from Capitol Police officers to custodians, with respect and great affection. Here in our district, he has already developed a reputation for first-rate constituent service, due to his responsiveness and quick problem solving.

While there is much wrong in the world of politics today, I just had to write and let everyone know how pleased and proud I am of our new state senator, the first state senator in our new 6th District! Keep up the good work, Ernie!
