Show Me Your Abs to run at Gallery One July 2 to 31

Gallery One in Ocean View announces a new exhibition, Show Me Your Abs, for the month of July. Each of the 15 artists will be showing a work that conveys a personal abstract interpretation of his or her subject. The show will be open to the public Tuesday, July 2, and run until Wednesday, July 31.

Some artists at Gallery One have created non-objective pieces that rely on shape, line, color and texture to communicate an idea. In “Color Me Summer,” Peggy Warfield paints with warm, bright colors to give the feeling of the summer season. Brush strokes are bold; colors are hot. Her inspiration for the abstraction is yellow sunbeams, red beach umbrellas and orange popsicles.

Joyce Condry created “Blues in the Night,” a mixed-media piece of blues, grays and white paint with metallic collage elements. It is a soothing and melodic piece. Living close to Rehoboth Bay, Condry said the abstract work is a reaction to the sights and musical sounds coming from the Rusty Rudder.

“Nothing Stays the Same” by Jeanne Mueller is a mixed-media work with many layers of torn papers and a dominant leaf shape on a rich alizarin crimson background. In this work Mueller has shared with the viewer how she has abstractly interpreted change in her life and her acceptance of it.

Abstraction can also be simplifying a picture into its essence with shape, line, form and color. To create a dreamlike quality, Laura Hickman did an abstract version of her usual pastel creation of a small-town scene. "Dreaming of Cornwall” is a pastel of a hilly street bordered by homes. She uses line in various angles to abstract her piece.

Lesley McCaskill also simplified a landscape by using blurred edges on shapes and exaggerated colors to convey the sound of evening in her work “Hushed.”

The public is invited to visit Gallery One to view this show and see the other art work the in the gallery: jewelry, pottery, textiles, wood, photography and glass. Gallery One also offers art classes for adults and children throughout the summer.

Gallery One is always staffed by one of the artists and is open daily, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., at 32 Atlantic Ave. (Route 26) in Ocean View, just a short drive west of Bethany Beach.
