Something to be said for a free air show

By Ron MacArthur | Aug 09, 2012

Bits and pieces from Sussex County Council:

FREE AIR SHOW - At the Aug. 7 meeting, Councilwoman Joan Deaver said she had a telephone call from a constituent who was complaining about crop dusters. Unfortunately, Deaver said, she was unable to get back with the caller. “I want to get the word out that they can get the plane's identification number and call the FAA,” she said.

Councilman Sam Wilson, who always steps up to defend his fellow farmers, fired back: “Next time they call, tell them there is no charge for the air show.”

FACEBOOK FACT CHECKS – On the subject of Deaver, who will face off against the winner of the Sept. 11 Republican primary, social media has become her weapon of choice to fire back at one of her opponents, Don Ayotte. She is using Facebook to reply to his comments by using what she calls Fact Checks. Ayotte is running against Brent Wangen in the primary.

THE CORRECT PRONOUN – It's not really fair to pick on Councilman George Cole, but he happened to be the one making the comment during the Aug. 7 meeting. As council prepared to vote on a councilmanic grant for an organization in his district, he said something to the effect: “I have supported them in the past.”

He can support them all he wants, but it's not his money being donated to the group. The money comes from Sussex County taxpayers; it's more correct to use the word “we.” Others have made similar comments over the years. Every once in awhile, it's good to be reminded that every cent of money being spent, collected and donated comes from “us.” It's a matter of choosing the proper pronoun.
