Sons of Thunder Bike Ministry rolls into Conley's UM Church May 24
A unique event for those with motorcycles or those who just like to be tuned into motorcycle events with a religious theme is the first motorcycle happening from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday, May 24, at Conley’s United Methodist Church in Angola.
The Sons of Thunder Bike Ministry in Long Neck, a nationally known group, is taking a leadership role in working with Conley’s for this event. Conley’s was chosen because of its spacious location and rapidly growing membership
“We are a Christian motorcycle ministry with chapters in several states,” said Phil Slocum, president of the Long Neck group, who, along with his wife, Laura, chairs the chapter. The Slocums live in Long Neck.
“We raise money for good causes - sometimes for our members,” Phil Slocum said. ”And, we pray for people. With this event, part of the money raised will go to Conley’s youth ministry.” In connection with raising money for a good cause, a silent auction will also be held.
“We hope that this will become an annual event,” said Slocum. “People can come just for a biker blessing. Or they can also come for a delicious pig roast of chicken or pork and sides, for $7."
In addition, there will be a contemporary worship service at 6:30 p.m. featuring the Rev. Jerry Howard of the Last Call Motorcycle Ministry, a national group whose headquarters are in Milford. Conley’s pastor, the Rev. Mike Hurley, will be one of the speakers at the worship service.
Music at the event will feature the Saturday Night Music Band, a Conley praise group.
“We are hoping for good weather and turnout that day,” said Hurley. “We are so excited about this event. Some of the bike riders attend services here, but there are many in the area and we hope to see them May 24.”
“Rev. Howard is not just a pulpit pastor. He travels around from church to church and much of his travel is done by motorcycle,” said Hurley.
The event will go on rain or shine. For more information, call 302-460-3425 or 302-752-8373.
