Saint Mark’s coach Melissa Olsen smiled as the final horn sounded and her young Spartans team secured a 10-8 victory over Sussex Tech to improve to 2-0 on the season.

“This is the first season in nine years Saint Mark’s hit the field without a Schweizer in the lineup,” Olden said.

But a nod down the sidelines was given to assistant coaches Lori Schweizer and her daughter Courtney, a recent graduate of Johns Hopkins, where she was a midfielder.

“Downstate, there’s a lot better competition than we have upstate,” Olsen said. “Kids down here seem to grow up playing lacrosse. The girls on my team get introduced to it a little bit later.”

Olsen said this year her talent is more spread out as they work their way back to being a state tournament team.

Saint Mark’s jumped the Ravens early in the first half and led 6-1, but before you could say "what up?” the Ravens had tied the score at 6 just before halftime.

Sussex Tech was coming off an opening-game 7-6 overtime loss to Polytech.

"We had three practices outside to start the season, but everyone else has the same weather to deal with,” coach Kathleen Fluharty said after the game. “But when 80 percent of your players come in with little lacrosse experience, it really hurts us. We feel good for what we’ve been doing. We were right there in two games, just have to pick up the scoring."

The Ravens were scheduled to play at Sts. Peter and Paul Thursday, March 27.

Dorian Zimmerman led the Ravens with four goals and has nine of the Ravens' 14 goals in the first two games.
