Speaker to present Trans Sensitivity and Understanding at April 8 PFLAG meeting

Apr 01, 2014

Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays - Rehoboth Beach will celebrate its third anniversary at its 6 p.m., Tuesday, April 8 meeting at the Lewes Public Library, 111 Adams Ave. in Lewes.

Guest speaker Catherine Hyde, a member of the PFLAG national board and Mid-Atlantic regional director will present a Trans Sensitivity and Understanding workshop. Hyde is mother to a 20-year-old, whom she did not believe when he told her at the age of 4 that something had gone wrong in her belly and he was supposed to be a she. She did not understand "trans" until 10 years later, when NPR educated her.

Since then, her child has transitioned and Hyde has become educated. Today, she provides training and support to educators, businesses and families in Maryland and at conferences across the nation. She is recently returned from Thailand, where one of her workshops was accepted at the World Association for Transgender Health. Her engaging style and humorous insights from a raising a gender-nonconforming child help illuminate concepts of gender across the spectrum.

PFLAG - Rehoboth Beach provides support, education, and advocacy to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people, their loved ones, family and friends, to cope with the unique challenges each of them may face. PFLAG offers a safe place for people who have questions or would like share their experiences with others.

PFLAG provides a confidential setting that is respectful of human diversity. PFLAG - Rehoboth Beach meets at 6 p.m. on the second Tuesday of every month at the Lewes Public Library, Lewes. For more information, call Linda Gregoryat 302-841-1339 or email PFLAGRehobothBeach@gmail.com.
