St. George's Chapel thrift shop to open Nov. 29
In a very ambitious move, St. George’s Chapel of Harbeson is opening the doors of its new thrift shop in Millsboro from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Friday, Nov. 29, the day after Thanksgiving.
It’s located in a shopping strip at Trading Post Plaza on Route 24, across from Mary Mother of Peace Catholic Church.
Dorsey Johnson, a member of St. George’s Chapel, is now volunteer acting manager of the new shop. A retired teacher, Johnson has many volunteer interests, including substitute teaching for the Indian River School District. She wears many hats in her work with her church, including singing in the choir and helping with the preparation of refreshments for the Christmas Shop, an annual parish charity fundraising event in Rehoboth Beach.
“We have a seven-member parish oversight committee that now handles the concerns of our two thrift shops,” said Johnson. “Up to now, we’ve focused on one shop, the All Saints’ shop in Rehoboth Beach. That and the new shop are part of The Episcopal Parish of All Saints’ Church in Rehoboth Beach and St. George’s Chapel in Harbeson.”
The process for opening the new thrift shop has been fast-moving. Melissa Richardson, a St. George’s Chapel member and member of the oversight committee, turned over the storefront space to St. George’s to facilitate the opening of the new shop. That was Nov. 1, this year. The project immediately started moving.
“The Rev. Max Wolf, rector of the parish, was favorable to the project from the start,” said Johnson. “So was Richard Faull, manager of the All Saints’ shop. The members of St. George’s Chapel were also supportive.” Some 30 volunteers quickly signed up. ”We are looking for more volunteers, especially cashiers,” said Johnson.
Dan Slagle is assistant manager of the Rehoboth shop and also now has duties with St. George’s Chapel Thrift Shop of Millsboro. Both he and Faull oversee the shops.
Donations of clothing, knickknacks, books and small pieces of furniture are welcome.
Items for the new Millsboro shop may be left at the Rehoboth shop with a tag indicating where the donor wants them to go. Or, items can be delivered to the new Millsboro shop during business hours. No items should be left during nonbusiness hours.
The phone number for the Millsboro St. George’s Chapel thrift shop is 302-945-5455. The shop is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
