St. Peter’s to host delegation from companion parish in Mexico Nov. 7 to 11Fund Raising Feast Nov. 8 will support preschoolers at Centro Infantil
The senior warden of St. Paul’s Anglican Church in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, Adrian Ross, and principal of Centro Infantil San Pablo Preschool, Patricia Cortes, will visit Lewes Thursday to Monday, Nov. 7-11. Members and youth from St. Peter's and All Saints' and St. George's churches have visited and worked at Centro Infantil during the last two years.
Centro Infantil is a school for 3- to 5-year-old children who live in the campo area of San Miguel. They are among the poorest youngsters in Mexico; their homes have no electricity, running water or toilets. Their adult guardians make less than $250 per month and often have three or more children in their care. Centro Infantil offers them above-standard education as confirmed by Mexican state inspections. They score higher on standardized tests than most other children in San Miguel.
In addition, they receive medical checkups, dental checkups, and eye exams. They also get a filling lunch, often their only meal of the day. The 5-year-olds graduate with all the skills needed to succeed in the public schools of Mexico and often attain the highest scores on standardized tests in those schools.
In celebration of the visit, St. Peter’s will host a Fund Raising Feast Friday, Nov. 8 at the Parish Hall, 211 Mulberry St., Lewes. All are welcome to the dinner, which is being catered by The Essential Chef and features its famous crab cakes and fried chicken, with apple pie and ice cream as dessert.
Reservations are limited and must be made with payment of $50 per person at the parish office, 302-645-8479. All proceeds will go to support Centro Infantil, and $30 of the fee is federally tax deductible. There will also be a silent auction that evening with items gathered from Lewes and Mexico.
