State children’s department announces community mini-grants

Applications must be received by July 1
Jun 19, 2013

Delaware community-based organizations have until the end of June to apply for two types of mini-grants as part of the 2013 Alternative Community Grant program. This grant opportunity is being offered by the Division of Prevention and Behavioral Health Services, which is part of the state’s Department of Services for Children, Youth and their Families.

State private nonprofit and for-profit organizations are able to apply for the Community Programming/Activities Grant and/or the Technology Grant funding. Applicants must demonstrate how funds will be used to implement prevention programming. The maximum award for each grant will be $4,999.

Both grants may be used for programming and/or activities that occur in community settings including community centers, faith-based institutions, youth groups and educational settings. The Community Programming/Activities grant may be used to address efforts to prevent underage drinking; combat alcohol, tobacco, marijuana and other drug abuse; promote anti-bullying; and prevent violence, delinquency and recidivism, as well as efforts that promote health and wellness, mental health and resiliency.

Other programming activities may include activities geared toward and supporting parents in the areas of underage drinking prevention, fetal impact awareness and children of alcoholics counseling. However, the primary target population for the grants is youth.

Activities may include co-morbid illnesses and risk factors from the effects of drugs and/or alcohol; suicide prevention; and awareness around lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning youth. Technology grants will provide funding for website design and/or improvements, computers, laptops, and other related equipment such as printers, scanners, projectors, monitors, modems, and hardware and software.

Completed applications must be received by 4:30 p.m., Friday, July 1. All awardees will be notified by Friday, July 12, and awards must be spent by Sept. 30. Applications may be downloaded at kids.delaware.gov/pbhs/pbhs.shtml, by calling 302-633-2586, or by emailing Deanna.Watson@state.de.us. They may also be picked up in person at the Division of Prevention and Behavioral Health Services, 1825 Faulkland Road, Murphy Cottage, Wilmington.

The Department of Services for Children, Youth and their Families provides services to children who have been abused, neglected, are dependent, have mental health or substance problems, or have been adjudicated delinquent by the courts, as well as prevention services targeted toward all youth.
