State launches deldhub.com for youth and young adults in transition
The Governor’s Advisory Council for Exceptional Citizens, with support from the Delaware General Assembly, announces the launch of the DelAWARE DisABILITY Hub, a resource for youth and young adults in transition.
The launch occurred recently in front of a packed House chamber at a ceremony in Legislative Hall. This new website, deldhub.com, is a portal of resources to serve the disability community in Delaware; it was funded by the General Assembly and supported by Delaware’s leaders who saw the value and importance of a transition website.
In his opening comments, Lt. Gov. Matt Denn gave credit to the Governor’s Advisory Council for Exceptional Citizens in taking the lead in the project.
Transition is a lifelong process of moving from one stage to another. Adolescence to adulthood is one transition, and for some, especially individuals with disabilities, this transition is fraught with questions and concerns.
The DelAWARE DisABILITY Hub will serve Delaware’s roughly 18,000 school-age children with disabilities. The sections of the website were carefully planned to provide information to make life easier for the users of the site. Major areas of focus include the following; Education, Employment, Health, Housing, It’s My Life, Legal Issues, Transportation and Understanding My Disability.
In each subsection of the site, users will find valuable resources such as personal stories, frequently asked questions, tool kits filled with information, lesson plans for educators, videos, and links.
A parent can research housing options for a child who is approaching or has arrived at adulthood, or what the child's rights are as he/she seeks employment.Teachers can use free lesson plans to assist them when teaching students valuable skills they can use as they go from school to college or into the workforce. The education section hosts a Higher Ed category to assist students seeking out postsecondary options as well as Delaware’s most comprehensive area for gifted and talented students to find resources they need.
The goal of this website is to provide a depository of information and resources for individuals with disabilities to access as they move from high school to work, postsecondary education, or other supported environments. The process can be daunting, and while there are resources available on services throughout the state, they are spread out and often, due to funding, out of date or no longer viable. The objective of deldhub.com is to bring all of the important information to one site, and monitor the information so it remains current and accurate.
