Strawberry Festival set May 17 in Laurel

Source: Submitted Strawberries, strawberries, strawberries - by the quart, by the gallon, in ice cream, on shortcake - will be offered at St. Phillip's Episcopal Church in Laurel Saturday, May 17.

St. Phillip's Episcopal Church in Laurel will host its Eighth Annual Strawberry Festival from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, May 17.

Highlights of the festival include Chef Jeff Dolby returning this year to serve his classic scrapple sandwiches; chicken salad/croissant sanwiches and platters; hot dogs; oyster fritter sandwiches and cream of crab soup; Attic Treasures including antiques and collectibles; gourmet baked goods including gallettes; strawberry desserts and strawberry lemonade; and many exhibitors and artisans. Strawberries by the quart and gallon will also be for sale.

Musician Tony Windsor will play from 9 to 11 a.m. Wesley Mitchell, organist and music director at St. Phillip's, will play the piano on the patio at midday. More artists continue to sign on. Check out St. Phillip's Strawberry Festival on Facebook for updates.

The Hen House, 11465 Sycamore Road in Laurel, will offer homemade strawberry ice cream and strawberry picking.

New this year, EYSC - Engaging Youth, Serving Community - a youth group meeting at the Laurel Public Library, will showcase its newest project:  the Broad Creek Community Fitness Trail at Roger C. Fisher Memorial Park in Laurel.  Also, the EYSC will be leading a community walk on the day of the Strawberry Festival.

Also new to 2014, the Laurel Historical Society will present a genealogy research table.  Visitors can bring some names and dates, and members will help them get started with an ancestry search.  The LHS will also again be selling pieces from the inventory of Broad Creek Pottery, lately of Laurel.

Parking will be free on the street and in town parking lots.

One hundred percent of the proceeds from the festival will be donated to charities and people in need in Laurel.  St. Philip’s Episcopal Church is at 600 S. Central Ave., Laurel. Call 302-875-5537 for information.
