The Summer Solstice 5K/10K Shadow Run held June 21 at Cape Henlopen State Park in Lewes took place under a super full moon. Both races started together at 7 p.m., and by 8:10 it was Rind Time as all runners were back eating watermelon and banana nubs and kids were toasting marshmallows.

Patrick Beebe, 43, a former Cape cross country runner, won the 5K race in 18:33. Mardiny Ung, 46, was the first woman with a time of 22:34.

The 10K race was won by Breck Vanderwende, 39, on the weekend of his 40th birthday in 41:43.

Laura Marvin, 27, was the first woman to complete the 10K in 55:10.

A surprise in the 5K race was Dave McCloy, 45, of Lewes, who works in the plumbing department at George Sherman in Lewes. Dave ran his first 5K in cargo shorts on virtually no running training in a time of 21:23, which is 6:53 per mile. Dave is an avid biker and is one of those lean body types and smiles too much to have any vices.

Amazingly, Jay Reed, a former Cape state champion in cross country and the mile in 1976, works in the same Lewes office, giving George Sherman the best one-two plumbing punch in distance running.

The next Shadow Series run is 6 p.m., Saturday June 27, starting at the Biden Center in Cape Henlopen State Park. Bring a can of bug spray and a running suit made of mosquito netting.

Breck Vanderwende, 39, won the 10K. Breck turned 40 on June 22 but stays in the 35-39 age group because you can't change age groups in the middle of the summer. You can only change gender with a valid driver's license. (Photo by: Dave Frederick )
