Thoughts From the Sidelines

Summer sports ramp up as thermometer rises

By Sumner Spence | Jun 19, 2014

The NBA season is finally over! The San Antonio Spurs completed a thorough domination of the Miami Heat by giving the Heat NO chance to come back to win game five and be able to stay in the series. The craziest part about the NBA schedule is the fact that the draft occurs so soon after the championship. This year's draft will be held June 28.  I think the draft should be in August to give the teams more of a chance to study the picks.

I can't believe I forgot to mention the French Open tennis results in last week's column. Rafael Nadal won an amazing ninth championship in ten years of play there. Marie Sharapova won her second French Open. She is the highest paid female athlete in the world right now.

Getting back on track with this weeks sports news, Martin Kymer completely dominated the United States Open Golf Championship from wire to wire. He set a tournament record score at 10 under par through the first two rounds. No one even got close to him and he won by an 8- shot margin! Phil Mickelson is still searching for that win in the U.S. Open. Maybe next year.

In soccer news you would have to be living under a rock to not know about the awesome win this past Monday that the U.S. team achieved in its first round game against Ghana. The U.S. scored its first goal at only 29 seconds into the start of the game! It really gave them the momentum to seek out the victory. When the U.S. faces Portugal and then Germany, players will have to be faster and cleaner to have a chance to earn points and be able to advance to the knockout rounds. GO, USA!
