Sussex Academy achieves high proficiency ratings from state

Open house for current eighth-graders set for Feb. 9
Feb 05, 2013

The Sussex Academy in Georgetown recently achieved high proficiency ratings from the Delaware Department of Education Charter School Office. The Delaware State Board of Education, Governor’s Office and Delaware Department of Education developed a comprehensive Performance Framework to ensure that each and every Delaware Department of Education-authorized charter school is serving students with a high-quality public education.

The framework sets the academic, fiscal and organizational standards by which the Delaware public charter schools are evaluated. For the 2011-12 school year, the academy’s school proficiency score on state examinations for math was 95.8 percent, compared to the 71.1 percent state average. For ELA, the school achieved a proficiency percentage of 98.2 percent, versus the 73.5 percent state average.

Sussex Academy, the only charter school in Sussex County, has been open since 2000. Currently serving grades six to eight, the school is expanding to include a high school. The academy will open to its first freshman class next school year. In order to accommodate the expanding student body, the school has an agreement with Delmarva Christian High School to exchange buildings this summer.

Sussex Academy will hold an open house for current eighth-grade students and parents from 9 to 11 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 9, at the new school location (current Delmarva Christian High School), 21550 Airport Road, Georgetown. For more information, go to www.sussexacademy.org or call 302-856-3636.
