Sussex Central to present 'The Fantasticks' Feb. 13-15

The Take Two Drama Club of Sussex Central High School will present the first high school production in Sussex County in decades of the musical theater classic "The Fantasticks" by Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt, by special permission of MTI.

The show will be presented at 7 p.m., Thursday and Friday,  Feb. 13 and 14, and 2 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 15, at the Center for Visual and Performing Arts at Sussex Central High School, 26026 Patriots Way, Georgetown. A special Valentine's Day Party starting at 5:30 p.m., Friday, Feb. 14, is included in the price of admission.

General admission is $8 at the door; students, seniors and military pay $5. Middle school students with ID are admitted on a special two-for-one ticket for $5. No one will be turned away for inability to pay. Purchase tickets at the door starting at 5:30 p.m. for evening performances, 1 p.m. on matinee day.

The creation of Tom Jones (book and lyrics) and Harvey Schmidt (music), "The Fantasticks" is the world's longest-running show still in its original theater, the world's longest-running musical, and the longest running show in American theater history. The show won an Obie Award and the 1992 Special Tony Award.

“This is the first high school production of 'The Fantasticks' in Sussex County in decades,” says director and Sussex Central drama instructor David Warick. “This is a perfect musical and love story for the Valentine’s Day weekend!”

Besides live musicians, the production also features sets, costumes, props and lights designed and built by SCHS students. The cast features ninth- through 12th-graders, and all proceeds from ticket sales go directly to the nonprofit Take Two Drama Club to support the production of future shows.
