Sussex County Master Gardeners announce winter-spring workshopsSeries begins with Houseplant Care Jan. 28
Classes on houseplants, songbirds and landscape design kick off the first-quarter 2014 workshops offered by Sussex County Master Gardeners in Georgetown. All workshops in this winter-spring series are free.
At 1 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 28, Master Gardener Fran Meehan will conduct a workshop on Houseplant Care. Participants are asked to bring tired or sick houseplants for a little TLC. The class will diagnose and remediate specific plant problems and then cover general houseplant growing concerns.
At 7 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 12, Master Gardener Bob Dougherty will present a workshop on Blue Birds and Songbirds of Delmarva. Dougherty will also give a brief introduction to the many types of bluebird box designs and setting up a neighborhood bluebird trail. There will also be an open discussion on the diet and needs of neighborhood birds.
At 7 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 26, Master Gardener Wendy Ferrante will host Landscape Design for Your Home. Bring a photo of a landscaping problem, and the class will discuss what can be done to improve the home’s curbside appeal. Students will learn now to graph out their own designs and do research in order to complete their landscape at home.
At 1 p.m., Tuesday, March 4, Master Gardener Gaye Mara will present a workshop on kitchen gardens, Edible Landscaping: Have Your ‘Scape and Eat it, Too. This workshop seeks to inform and inspire the next edible gardening project with planning and planting tips; top recommended plants for beauty, flavor, and vigor; and photo examples of attractive kitchen gardens both large and small.
At noon, Thursday, March 20, Master Gardeners Tracy Mulveny and Susan Trone will present a workshop on propagation, Get the Jump on Spring. This workshop will offer techniques for starting seeds and cuttings using traditional and repurposed materials.
The workshops will be held at the Elbert N. and Ann V. Carvel Research and Education Center, 16483 County Seat Highway, Georgetown.
