Sussex may be small, but it makes impact

By Cathy Ramsey | Jan 11, 2013

On Nov. 11, 2012, I received a Facebook posting from my sister-in-law, a teacher in the Island Park Community of Long Island, N.Y.  A colleague teacher of hers had extended a plea for help, describing the post Hurricane Sandy area as a decimated, uninhabitable community.  Her heartfelt concerns revolved around the students and families of a closeknit town, who in a few short hours lost not only their homes, but schools as well.

In true Facebook fashion, I immediately posted this cry for help on my page. Responses came quickly; however two young, selfless members of Sussex County rose to the occasion. Jennifer Noonan and Eileen Baker, both of Lewes, immediately began organizing book and clothing drives in what little spare time they had. Jennifer Noonan was able to coordinate a book drive with the assistance and support of Friends of Lewes Library, and at Jennifer's suggestion, Kids Cottage became a donation site for what resulted in multiple boxes of books for elementary aged children.

Eileen arranged a book and warm clothing drive within Morris Early Childhood Center, Lincoln, and dropped off an entire car's worth of donations.  Neither of these women have any connection to Island Park, however they went above and beyond to help in whatever way was needed.  That speaks volumes for the caliber of people that reside in this town.  For anyone who I have not had the chance to thank, please know that the true thanks will come when every child is able to take a book home, or stay warm this winter because of your generosity.

I have had the pleasure of being a part of Sussex County for the past five years.  Charitable acts such as this are frequent, and make this town an amazing place to call home.  I wanted to take the time to single out these extraordinary women, who are more than busy as mothers and career women, and give them the thanks they rightfully deserve.  It warms my heart to know each of you.  Sussex County may be small, but it can obviously make a tremendous impact on this world thanks to people like Jennifer and Eileen.

This type of samaritanism restores our faith in human kind. Does it not?
