Sussex men face illegal deer hunting charges

By Melissa Steele | Aug 14, 2013

Two Sussex County men face charges after officials say they hunted deer with a rifle Aug. 10 in Milton.

Matthew C. Butler, 22, of Lewes and Jordan J. Dill, 19, of Ellendale were on Hudson Road when Division of Fish and Wildlife agents responded to a report of shots fired, said Sgt. Gregory Rhodes of the Division of Fish and Wildlife Enforcement.

Agents found a 22-caliber rifle with the men, Rhodes said.

“Hunting deer out of season and using a rifle to hunt deer are not only illegal hunting practices, these actions also demonstrate poor hunting ethics,” Rhodes. “Through public outreach and hunter education, we stress ethical, conservation-minded hunting practices – and we encourage the public’s support to help us catch those relatively few hunters who break the law and tarnish the reputation of the sport.”

Butler and Dill were charged with third-degree conspiracy, hunting during a closed season and illegal method of take/use of a prohibited weapon for hunting deer. They were released on unsecured bond pending a trial in the Court of Common Pleas, Rhodes said.
