Sussex Progressive Community to hold forum March 30Focus is role of Office of Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity
The Sussex Progressive Community will hold a dinner meeting Sunday, March 30, at Fish On restaurant in the Villages of Five Points. Dinner is at 5 p.m. with the meeting to follow.
April 2014, marks the 46th anniversary of the enactment of the Fair Housing Act. While many battles have been won in the fight against discrimination, the work is not complete. In the spirit of Fair Housing Month Melody Taylor, regional director of the U.S. Dept. of Housing and Urban Development's Office of Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity will share information regarding:
• The role of the Office of Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity in our communities;
• Fair housing rights and the responsibilities of housing providers, homeowners, renters, and residents of manufactured home communities; and
• A discussion of the lawsuit filed by HUD and the U.S. Justice Department against Sussex County Council and Sussex Planning & Zoning Commission for alleged race and national origin discrimination when the land use approval for a 50-lot affordable housing subdivision was denied, and the results of the settlement reached Nov. 28, 2012, that required the county to take affirmative steps to provide for future affordable and fair housing in Sussex County.
Taylor is responsible for the leadership, management and operations of the mid-Atlantic region with offices in Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Baltimore, Richmond and Washington, D.C. She oversees the agency's efforts of enforcement, compliance, and education and outreach in administering the Fair Housing Act and other civil rights related laws.
Attendees may choose from the complete menu, including a Sunday Night special of three courses for $19. Reservations are required. Contact Joanne Cabry at 302-226-5019 or firstname.lastname@example.org. The Sussex Progressive Community is a nonpartisan group that meets periodically to give Progressives an opportunity to meet, to learn, and to act if they so choose.
