Three students at Sussex Technical High School were recently honored as 2013 recognized Carson Scholars. Sophomores John Barrett of Lewes and Holly Anderson of Milton, and freshman Zachary Varrato of Georgetown were acknowledged for their continued academic and humanitarian achievements. They were among more than 5,600 gifted students from across the country who have been named Carson Scholars.

Barrett is studying business, finance and marketing. Anderson's technical area is athletic healthcare. Varrato is a digital print design student. They were honored at the Carson Scholars Fund 17th Annual Awards Banquet in April in Baltimore, Md.

The Carson Scholars Fund awards college scholarships to students who excel academically and are dedicated to serving their communities. A student is nominated by his/her school. Minimum requirements are a 3.75 GPA and involvement in community service. The Carson Scholars Fund seeks to combat the American education crisis by discovering promise and rewarding excellence in this nation’s youth through scholarship and reading room programs. The Carson Scholars Fund was founded in 1994 by world-renowned pediatric neurosurgeon Dr. Ben Carson and his wife, Candy.
