The Cape soccer team dominated possession, position and shots on goal 17-6 against the visiting Tatnall Hornets Sept. 10, but according to coach Gary Montalto, “We did not dominate the back of the net."

And then in a sudden strike with under eight minutes remaining, midfielder Billy Swontek took a crossing pass from Kai Vitella just outside the 18 and kept the ball on the floor, beating the goalie to his right for the only goal of the game and a 1-0 Cape victory.

The win comes on the heels of a 2-1 victory over Tower Hill as Cape improved to 2-0 on the season.

“We are finally getting to the point where the kids are believing in themselves, and maybe upstate coaches will see that we have some players down here," Montalto said.

Tatnall goalie Marcus Thorburn had 11 saves while Griffin Kammerer had 5 saves for Cape.

"I was trying to take more shots near the end, feeling just a little annoyed that we were dominating and still tied," Swontek said of the Tower Hill game. Swontek kicked off for the football team Friday night, putting a couple near the goal line, and even had to push a return man out of bounds.

“The more balls we can win in the middle of the field, the better we’re going to be. We had some great chances with Max [Euler] and Miguel [Marino], and we have to put the ball in the back of the net," said Montalto.

Montalto cited Jack Norwood, Nester Bermudes, Tyler Malloy, Jack Ashby and Josh Lesher as doing great jobs coming off the bench to help Cape to victory.
