Thank You Delaware Bay campaign announces youth art contest

Deadline for submissions is Dec. 31
Nov 19, 2013

Young people can demonstrate their talents and creativity by designing a new Thank You Delaware Bay public service advertisement that highlights why they are thankful for the Delaware Bay. The contest challenges students ages 6 to 16 to draw or paint an original public service ad that demonstrates their appreciation for the beauty and amenities of the bay.

“The Delaware Bay provides us with food, jobs, history, recreational opportunities and precious natural resources,” said Delaware National Estuarine Research Reserve Educator Jennifer Holmes. “This contest is a wonderful opportunity for students to design an ad that will help increase awareness of the bay’s importance in our region.”

Entries must be original artwork drawn or painted on an official contest frame template and must include an entry form, both of which are available from DNERR’s St. Jones Reserve in Dover. Only artwork created in pencil, crayon, marker or paint will be accepted. Computer-generated art or modifications to the frame template will not be accepted. All entries must be received by Tuesday, Dec. 31. Entries can be submitted by mail to the Delaware National Estuarine Research Reserve, 818 Kitts Hummock Road, Dover, DE 19901.

Three winners will be selected from each age group: 6-9, 9-12 and 13-16. The first-place winner’s ad from each group will be published in local newspapers as part of the Thank You Delaware Bay campaign, and posted at tydb.org.  In addition, first-prize winners will receive a first-place certificate and a horseshoe crab pin. Second-place ads will be posted on the website, and artists will be awarded a horseshoe crab pin and second-place certificate. Third-prize winners will have their ads posted on the website and receive a third-place certificate.

For more information, go to www.thankyoudelawarebay.org or call Holmes at 302-739-6377. Frame templates and entry forms for the contest can be mailed on request.

The Thank You Delaware Bay campaign teaches and promotes Delaware Bay stewardship through a partnership between DNREC’s Delaware Coastal Programs, Delaware Bayshore Initiative, and Division of Fish and Wildlife, The Nature Conservancy, Delaware Wild Lands, and the Partnership for the Delaware Estuary. The campaign slogan, The Delaware Bay Takes Care of Us - Let’s Return the Favor, encourages actions to help protect the bay’s health and resources.

This campaign is supported by DNREC’s Delaware Bayshore Initiative, a landscape approach to restore and protect fish and wildlife habitat, increase volunteer participation in habitat stewardship projects, enhance low-impact outdoor recreation and ecotourism opportunities, and promote associated environmentally compatible economic development.
