The Heart Truth initiative National Wear Red Day is Feb. 7

Jan 31, 2014
Sandra Roberts walks the runway at the General Federation of Women's Clubs' red dress fashion show at the national convention, where it was announced that The Heart Truth would partner with GFWC. The Heart Truth is a national education program for women that raises awareness about heart disease and is sponsored by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, a part of the National Institutes of Health.

Red is the fashion color for Valentine's Day, but Sandra Roberts of Rehoboth Beach has a reason beyond fashion to encourage women women to clothe themselves in crimson this February.

Roberts is participating in The Heart Truth, a national initiative which encourages women to participate in National Wear Red Day Friday, Feb. 7

In 2009, Roberts experienced several episodes of heartburn. When severe pain awakened her in the middle of the night, she wisely checked her blood pressure, which was 180/110. The emergency medical technicians arrived and gave her an aspirin. She was admitted to the hospital, and soon after her admittance, she had a heart attack. Eventually she had four stents inserted in her coronary arteries. Because she paid attention to her body, she is enjoying a happy, healthy life today.

Roberts reminds everyone that symptoms of heart attack in women are different from the classic episodes seen in movies of a man clutching his chest and falling to the floor. Women often experience fatigue, back or jaw pain, or nausea. Unfortunately, most women do not make the connection between risk factors such as high blood pressure and high cholesterol and their personal risk of getting heart disease.

Roberts, former president of the Village Improvement Association, is featured in The Heart Truth initiative, which has partnered with the General Federation of Women’s Clubs.

Heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women in the United States.  National Wear Red Day calls attention to women's heart health.
