'The Nutcracker' returns to the Schwartz Center Dec. 8 and 9Nutcracker Tea Dec. 8 to benefit Read Aloud Delaware
"The Nutcracker" returns to the Schwartz Center with Paul Janiga as music director for Polytech’s upcoming production at 2 p.m and 7 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 8 and at 2 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 9.
Janiga will be joining the Ballet Theatre of Dover’s cast of "The Nutcracker" this year in the role of Herr Drosselmeyer. He has been a stalwart figure int he music and theater community of Dover, having acted, played, accompanied and directed numerous shows in the area.
As Herr Drosselmeyer, Janiga will cast his magic over the production as he weaves the beloved story of a young girl who undertakes a magical journey one Christmas Eve.
Also in the production is Dillon Shifferly, a young dancer from the Philadelphia area who has danced with Dayton Ballet and North Carolina Dance Theatre.
Fifteen-year-old Allison Wilkins will dance the dual role of Clara and the Sugar Plum Fairy. Unlike other versions of the ballet, Clara starts off as a headstrong young girl who still plays with dolls. After Drosselmeyer presents her with a wooden Nutcracker doll, she only wants to be with this new doll. In the Battle Scene with the frightening rats who have grown bigger than she is, she shows her courage and devotion to him by distracting the Rat King as the Nutcracker puts an end to the battle by slaying the Rat King. The spell is broken....a young girl had loved the Nutcracker doll and risked her life for him despite his ugliness. In his place lies a handsome Prince who takes Clara on a journey to the Kingdom of the Sweets, where he reigns.
Dance Conservatory alumna Sara Biscardi will dance the role of the Snow Queen who guides the couple through the Land of Snow. Hope Wright, 16, will lead the Waltz of the Flowers as the luminous Dew Drop.
Tickets are available at the Schwartz Center. Prices are $25/adults, $22/seniors and military, $17/students and $12/children 12 and under.
