The Sandwich Ladies of Indy donate 100 gift packages to Jusst Sooup ministry
They’re called The Sandwich Ladies of Indy, and they meet twice a week at the clubhouse at Independence in Millsboro, a 55-plus community off Route 5. “We prepare sandwiches for the soup kitchen faithfully every Monday and Thursday and deliver them to Rev. Dunning,” said Ann Athas, who organized the ladies three years ago.
This year, the Sandwich Ladies of Indy added a holiday donation for both men and women. One hundred individual packages with toiletries, socks and candy were put together and brought to the Rev. Dale Dunning of Jusst Sooup ministry on Christmas Eve for distribution to those in need. Member Marji Demko was the driving force for this project.
“We’re proud to be able to help people right here in Sussex County. The people in this community are so generous, they donate turkeys and homemade casseroles at Thanksgiving too," said Jeanne Walsh, who coordinates the Monday sandwich deliveries.
Throughout the year, the ladies make 80-100 sandwiches per week, and variety is the name of the game. They put together the traditional bologna, turkey, and ham, all with American cheese, as well as an assortment of meats, salads, fruit and crackers.
