Three ferry vessels feature seating makeoverEmphasis on passenger comfort, added capacity
Cape May-Lewes Ferry officials have announced the completion of the newly-installed interior passenger seating aboard three ferry vessels.
The installation project, which began in mid-October 2012, was completed in-house at the Cape May terminal by ferry maintenance and marine crews. The renovations provide the ferry with an enhanced, modern appearance, as well as better quality, function, and value to ferry customers.
“We always looking for ways to create an even more enjoyable travel experience for our customers,” said Jim Gillespie, Cape May-Lewes Ferry port engineer. “The salon seats have numerous improvements such as tray tables, drink holders, and arm rests and they are arranged to accommodate individuals and various sized groups. Some seats even recline for additional relaxation during the crossing.”
With the installation of the new seating completed, each vessel’s passenger salon has significantly more seats available for customers. Gillespie noted the additional inside seating capacity will help to ensure that more passengers have a seat even when the boat is full. Gillespie added that “the new fabrics and modern seat construction are very comfortable and are specifically made for the harsh marine environment, which will reduce seat maintenance costs. Kudos to our vessel maintenance and marine staff here at the ferry who did a fine job installing the new seats.”
“Our goal is to wow our customers. They asked for better seating, we listened and we are pleased to provide it!” said Director of Ferry Operations Heath Gehrke. “This is the time of year when the locals, our regulars, are on the boats more often. We have been thrilled with their response to the new seats.”
In mid-October, work began on the MV Cape Henlopen when the old seating, furniture, and carpeting were removed. Prior to the new seating arrangement, new carpeting and flooring was installed. The MV New Jersey and MV Delaware underwent their respective makeovers in November and January.
The renovation process takes about three weeks per vessel. Cape May-Lewes Ferry employees performed all installation work at the Cape May terminal location. The project was completed Jan. 31.
