No charge for lecture
Aug 31, 2014

Tom Ryan of Bethany Beach will address the Georgetown Historical Society at 7:30 p.m., Monday, Sept. 8, at the Marvel Carriage Museum in Georgetown.

He will give an illustrated presentation touching on DuPont gunpowder production, the Union prison at Pea Patch Island, the underground railroad of Harriet Tubman, as well as the “reverse underground railroad” that supplied troops and war materials to the Confederacy.

The talk also will highlight Delaware personalities such as Admiral Samuel Francis DuPont as well as Georgetown native Maj. Gen. Albert Torbert and war correspondent/author George Alfred Townsend, the latter having been born near The Brick Hotel on The Circle.

Ryan currently writes a newspaper column called Civil War Profile and has published over 125 articles, some of which appeared in the Washington Times and the Washington Post.

The carriage museum is a mile south of the Georgetown Circle at 510 S. Bedford St. The public is invited to attend the lecture without charge, after which light refreshments will be served.
