Thoughts From the Sidelines

Transition time for sports

By Sumner Spence | Aug 15, 2013

At the men's PGA Championship this past week at the Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester, N. Y., golf didn't do much in TV ratings but was very good for golf geeks like me. Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson did not even come close to what their fans have come to expect of them in a major championship. The tournament offered a deep and diverse field of players. The course is old and famous and really beautiful. The fairways are narrow and the rough is deep and very hard to get out of. It got exciting in the final round when Jason Dufner and Jim Furyk had an interesting back and forth battle. Dufner was ultimately able to overwhelm Furyk with his impressive tee-to-green ball striking display. It came down to the last hole when Dufner pulled ahead by two shots and ended up finishing at 10 under par. It will be interesting to see how Duffner does with the pressure of being in the limelight given his extremely relaxed personality. The commentator's made a big deal all week about whether Dufner would even smile if he won. He did.

The wait is finally over for the 76ers in their search for a new head coach. What on earth took them so long to announce Brett Brown when they interviewed this guy back on draft day, June 30? It's been all over sports talk shows that he was the best guy available to step up to the challenge. He was the number one assistant for the San Antonio Spurs. I hope this is what Philly needs to finally have a decent basketball team. It's been too long.

Probably too little too late for the Phillies, but they are actually impressing me so far in this series against the Atlanta Braves. If they can keep this up for the rest of the season, the effort would help in redeeming what has transpired this summer and give hope for next year. Yes, I know, I am already looking forward to next year.

Football preseason has started but - it's not news worthy yet.
