Two confirmed fentanyl-laced heroin deaths bring state total to eight

Jun 09, 2014

A Millsboro heroin death April 2 and one in Claymont April 5 are the latest confirmed deaths attributed to fentanyl-laced heroin, bringing the state total to eight for the year.

Three deaths occurred in Sussex County, said Jill Fredel, director of communications for the Department of Health and Social Services. The other five deaths occurred in New Castle County.

The deaths involved six men and two women ranging in age from 28 to 58, she said.

In May, the Medical Examiner’s Office announced the first confirmed fentanyl-laced heroin overdose deaths in Delaware this year.

“The warning needs to get out that fentanyl-laced heroin is here in Delaware, and that people are dying from it,” said Department of Health and Social Services Secretary Rita Landgraf. “For those who suffer from addiction, the state and private providers are prepared to support individuals who are ready to seek treatment.”
